| It is quite common for us as artists to work alone. YouCube is about what is possible when a group of artists create together.
A group of artists aged between 5 and 67 each created a YouCube according to the same set of instructions. They were asked to contemplate 6 questions or ideas and to express their thoughts on their cube in any style. The cubes were then brought together to create a community sculpure. The YouCubes are currently on display at the Saanich Arts Centre. |
The Questions
A YouCube begins as an 8″ x 8″ x 8″ wooden cube to be painted or decorated in any style in answer to the following questions:
1. What stops you?
2. What inspires or nourishes you?
3. Who or what has had a negative influence on your life?
4. Who or what has had a positive influence on your life?
5. Create a self portrait
6. What is your biggest dream or aspiration for yourself and/or the world?
About the YouCubes
Each YouCube is beautiful and perfect, whole and complete. Just like we, as human beings, are whole and complete with all the sides of us.
But, what is special about this project is when the YouCubes come together. The YouCubes together create a visual of who we are as a community. So we get to see– What does is look like when a whole community of people is scared? What is possible as different sides of us become shown, so we stand in what is possible and draw on what inspires us?
